Shipping artwork is not like shipping everyday items. Fine art can be fragile, valuable, and sensitive to pressure, vibration, and temperature changes. This checklist helps you prepare paintings, framed pieces, prints, and sculptures for safer transport, and it highlights when professional packing or custom crating is the smarter move.
Step 1: Document condition before you pack
Before you touch a box, take clear photos of the artwork from multiple angles, including corners, frames, and any existing marks. If you’re shipping for a sale, gallery delivery, or insurance requirement, this simple step can help confirm the item’s condition at pickup and arrival.
Step 2: Choose the right packing materials
Use clean, non abrasive protection directly against the art surface. For framed pieces, add corner protectors and a protective layer over the glass or acrylic. Cushioning matters, but so does the type, foam sheets, bubble wrap, and sturdy void fill help reduce movement during transit.
Step 3: Select the correct box or crate
A snug fit is risky, and an oversized box is risky too. The goal is a strong outer container with room for layered cushioning on all sides. For many paintings and framed works, a double wall corrugated box is a solid starting point. For heavier pieces, oversized art, or high value shipments, a custom crate can provide better structural protection.
Step 4: Immobilize the artwork inside the package
The biggest cause of damage is internal shifting. Use foam, corner blocks, or custom inserts to keep the piece stable. For sculptures, protect protruding areas, wrap the form evenly, and prevent any “hard contact” points against the outer container.
Step 5: Label and plan the shipment correctly
Mark the package clearly, but remember that labels do not replace good packing. Choose a shipping method that matches the value, size, and urgency of the piece. If you need freight shipping for larger items, plan for secure palletization and additional protection.
